When experiencing pure essential oils for the first time I quickly recognized the power behind their smell. These pure, concentrated properties have the capability of interacting with our olfactory receptors in our nose. By simply breathing in the aroma of wild orange, for example, we may sense a calming or uplifting emotion. You might be asking, “Why?” or maybe, “No way Lisa, that is absurd!” Well, remember I was where you are once too, hear me out a minute. Our smell receptors are directly related to the limbic system of our brain. This system controls our emotional response. So pure essential oils are easily bound to the smell receptors causing an emotional response.
It gets even better, way beyond an emotional response, olfactory centers are connected to your hypothalamus which controls physiologic functions throughout your body. The hypothalamus interacts directly with the pituitary gland. What is so important about this little gland located in the brain?
It only helps to regulate:
- production of sexual hormones
- blood pressure function
- hunger and thirst needs
- sleep cycles
- memory
- thyroid function
As your Health Coach, this is so exciting, because even without eliciting change in your life through diet and exercise you can be influencing your body positively through the simple act of diffusing or breathing in these amazing oils!
Here are the steps to try:
-On the run, drop your favorite Doterra essential oil into your hand -cup your hands close to your nose and take in a few deep breaths. Wipe excess on your chest or the back of your neck.
-While working -diffuse motivate and watch your productivity increase.
-If stressed while driving consider a car diffuser. Diffuse balance, wild orange or your favorite oil to lessen the tension and fear.
